چکیده

9 We propose a novel method using Bayesian networks to learn the 10 structure of effective connectivity among brain regions involved in a 11 functional MR experiment. The approach is exploratory in the sense 12 that it does not require an a priori model as in the earlier approaches, 13 such as the Structural Equation Modeling or Dynamic Causal 14 Modeling, which can only affirm or refute the connectivity of a 15 previously known anatomical model or a hypothesized model. The 16 conditional probabilities that render the interactions among brain 17 regions in Bayesian networks represent the connectivity in the complete 18 statistical sense. The present method is applicable even when the 19 number of regions involved in the cognitive network is large or 20 unknown. We demonstrate the present approach by using synthetic 21 data and fMRI data collected in silent word reading and counting 22 Stroop tasks. 23 D 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. 24 25

Markov Random Field Modelling of fMRI Data Using a Mean Field EM-algorithm

This paper considers the use of the EM-algorithm, combined with mean field theory, for parameter estimation in Markov random field models from unlabelled data. Special attention is given to the theoretical justification for this procedure, based on recent results from the machine learning literature. With these results established, an example is given of the application of this technique for an...

Role of the mode of sensory stimulation in presurgical brain mapping in which functional magnetic resonance imaging is used.

OBJECT The aim of this study was to evaluate different types of sensory stimulation used to distinguish between microvasculature and venous drainage on functional magnetic resonance (fMR) images with blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) contrast. METHODS Seven volunteers received three sensory stimulations. One consisted of small discontinuous automated pokes to the ventral aspect of the right...

Integrating fMRI data into 3D conventional radiotherapy treatmentplanning of brain tumors

Introduction: This study was aimed to investigate the beneficial effects of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data in treatment planning for patients with CNS tumors in order to decrease the injury of functional regions of the brain followed by increase in life quality and survival of patients. This study pursues a novel approach in planning for the treatment of brai...

Functional MR imaging analysis of pain-related brain activation after acute mechanical stimulation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Most studies concerning imaging of pain processing have used thermal, chemical, or electrical nociceptive stimulation. The aim of the present study was to determine the cortical representation of mechanical pain. For this, using functional MR (fMR) imaging at 1.5 T, we compared activation patterns during painful and nonpainful tonic mechanical stimulation in healthy volun...

Mitral valve enlargement in chronic aortic regurgitation as a compensatory mechanism to prevent functional mitral regurgitation in the dilated left ventricle.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that mitral valve (MV) enlargement occurring in chronic aortic regurgitation (AR) prevents functional mitral regurgitation (FMR). BACKGROUND Chronic AR causes left ventricular (LV) dilation, creating the potential for FMR. However, FMR is typically absent during compensated AR despite substantial LV enlargement. Increased mitral leaf...
